Public Tours and Events

Visitors are welcome on the grounds of the Clark Library every weekday, 9am–5pm, when the University is open. Feel free to stroll along the paths, bring a picnic lunch, or read a book on the grass. Dogs are welcome as long as they are on leash.

The lower floor of the Library (reading room) is open weekdays, 9am-4:45pm, to all visitors who wish to conduct research using collection materials. Though the Clark is open to members of the public who need to use our collections, it is not a public library. The Clark Library is not equipped with public computers, public wifi, printers, or photocopiers. Because its collection focus is specialized, the Clark does not have most modern books, magazines, and newspapers typically held by public libraries. If your research requires the use of any of the above, we encourage you to visit one of the local public libraries near the Clark: Jefferson Library (2211 W Jefferson Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90018) or the Washington Irving Branch Library (4117 W Washington Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90018).

The first floor of the Library is only open to the public during free guided tours. Tours of the library building and the grounds are offered by appointment. Please contact us to book a tour or sign-up in person at the library. Upcoming tours are available at the following times:

Tours usually last about 45 minutes and include a guided walk through the Library and the artwork on display as well as an introduction to the history of the Clark family and the buildings and property in West Adams. If arranged in advance, tours may also include a small display of rare books and manuscripts.

Please note that walk-in tours are not available due to limited staff resources. We do not offer tours on weekends or holidays, when the Library is closed.

Starting in 2019 we plan to offer occasional “Collection Tours.” These tours will take place in one of the Library’s historical book rooms, giving patrons an opportunity to view books and manuscripts centered on specific time periods, authors, and themes. More info to come next year!
